Q. How do you apply the colours?

The majority of the colouring is done with an airbrush using either stock leather dyes or a combination of leather dye mixed with fade-proof drawing inks. Over the years we have tested the colour fastness, or fade resistant qualities, of many colouring agents and are very pleased with the current mixes. Occasionally we apply these dyes with a hand held fine paintbrush to bring up colour balance or shadow effects.

Whenever we try to match directly the colour content of the stones that are set in some covers we rely on acrylic paints applied by paintbrush or daubers.

Q. Will colours run or fall off?

No. We use dyes that are oil-alcohol blends and this enables it to soak directly into the pores of  the leather. The leather we use is an ivory to cream colour when we start, which allows us to utilize the full spectrum of colour.

Colouring is sealed to the leather with a clear acrylic finish, and as a final step a water repellant finish is applied. We provide a written direction on the care of the leathers with each piece.

Q. Is the book included with the cover?

Yes, the book insert is included in the price.

Q. Do you do custom work?

I am afraid we can no longer do custom work as we are too busy developing our own designs. Our original works on the site are always changing and it is best to visit the site frequently to note this development and possibly to find your book already done for you.

Q. Are all of the designs your own?

Yes. Although we have an appreciation for many other styles of artwork, we have always found our hand going toward developing our own designs.

Q. What kind of leathers do you use?

All exterior panels are fashioned from vegetable tanned cowhides. This type of leather is often referred to as ‘carving’ or ‘saddle’ leather. This leather must be wet when worked on, and when dried and sealed with acrylics, it will retain even the slightest mark made on it.

Interior leathers are chrome-tanned pigskin, chosen for its good looks as well as its amazing durability.

Q. Can I return an item if I’m not happy?

We have a very generous return policy as we have never had an issue with product failure in over 30 years.

Q. How can I be sure that the colour I see is what I’ll receive?

We spend a lot of time with the camera, lighting and computer to make sure the colours represented are as true to the piece as possible. Feel free to read our colour policy.

Q. How long will it take for my order to arrive?

With the one of a kind or original pieces, they are finished and will be shipped within 2 days of your processed order.

Stock items can take up to 3 weeks if we are out of the item at the time your order arrives.
